If you couldn’t tell…I absolutely, 100% LOVE what I do as a health coach. Truly, I know I was put on the planet to help other people feel their best. While I may KNOW that now, I haven’t always felt like it was a calling worthy of me pursuing. As you know, we live in a pretty negative society. The messages we constantly here are ones like…

  • You’re never good enough…
  • You’re never pretty, skinny, happy, energetic, productive enough…
  • You have to suffer to get anything good to happen…
  • You have to manipulate in order to get what you want…
  • You’re ridiculous & radical if you go against the grain and do things different than everyone else…
  • You’ll fail.

Does ANYONE out there feel this way? Can I get an amen?!?! 🙂

It’s so sad that this is the environment we live in. THIS is why so many never reach their fullest potential. THIS is why a staggering 80% of Americans don’t feel fulfilled in their jobs and wish they could do something else. Imagine with me for a minute, a world in which EVERYONE did what they were passionate about. Where EVERYONE operated in their strengths…we’d have every area covered because each of us was created with individual passions, traits, strengths, and characteristics. If you don’t like people for instance, you probably shouldn’t work in customer service. If you hate the smell of paint, you probably shouldn’t be a painter. If you pass out at the site of blood, you probably shouldn’t be an EMT. Makes sense, right? But somehow we were told we have to do what everyone else does, the way everyone else does it, in order to be successful. So…we settle. Well…I won’t. I’m breaking through the societal norm and I want to encourage you to do the same. For those who have a similar calling on their hearts, I want to take you with me.

How many of you have started to believe the lies you’ve been told about your potential? It’s super challenging sometimes to break through those voices. These are some of the things I’ve been told that I REFUSE to accept…

☠ You can’t truly have your body back after you have a baby. Everything gets stretched out and you’ll never be the same.

☠ You can’t REALLY make a substantial income from home. That’s something that exists in fantasy land.

☠ It’s not possible to do what you truly love AND get paid good money for it.

☠ You’re a grown up now…you can’t expect to find a job where you get more than 2 weeks of vacation each year. You should be happy with what they give you.

☠ As you get older, you’ll see…you can’t be that healthy for long.

☠ Everybody is going to get a disease at some point in their life these days.

☠ You’re dreaming if you think you can actually be super successful working on your own schedule, helping other people, and make 6-7 figures/year. That’s not reality…what a waste of time.

What would happen if I accepted these lies as truth? I’d still be packing around baby weight (Which I’ve not only lost all of, but 7 pounds more…), I’d be miserable in my current job without any hope of the future, my family wouldn’t have been blessed with the amazing additional income & free superfoods these past 6 months, my soul wouldn’t be ON FIRE to help others, AND most importantly…the large group of people I’ve been able to encourage and help in their journey to health & wellness…they’d still be sick, overweight, hopeless, yoyo dieting, with their health problems and NO HOPE for the future. Now, that just isn’t ok with me…so what I will say to all of the haters out there…

????WATCH ME??✌?️

Joining the Beachbody team has truly changed my life in the past 6 months. I am stronger inside and out than I have EVER been. Talk about a fast transformation! I have purpose and passion in my heart. Top 5 Harmful Foods

Although I am anti-deprivation and pro-filling your plate with a bountiful of various fresh foods, there are some damaging foods you need to know about to avoid any further detrimental long-term effects to your body. These usually won’t kill you if you consume them once, but over time they are gauranteed to drain your energy level, jack up your hormones (yes men, you fo sho have hormones too!), make your skin wrinkly, pack on the pounds, and significantly increase your risk of cancer and disease by leaps and bounds. What’s sad is that these foods are in the majority of people’s every day diet. And….we wonder why the cancer rate has drastically increased to 1 out of 2 people. It’s pretty easy to see why when you take a step back and look at what most people are eating every day, not to mention stress, toxins, etc. YOU CAN live a healthy life free of disease! It’s not all that hard, just eat clean, be happy, drink water, get rest, get grounded, and find ways to manage your stress.

As much as you can, try to avoid these lame.com foods that will make you a sicko.

1. Sugar

White sugar is one of the most detrimental elements for our health. Not only does it cause inflammation, suppress the immune system, cause infection to grow, and create chronic fatigue, but it is the #1 food choice for cancer. As far back as 1957 in his article published in the Michigan Organic News, Dr. William Coda classified sugar as a poison because it is stripped of life forces, vitamins and minerals. “What is left consists of pure, refined carbohydrates. Incomplete carbohydrate metabolism results in the formation of `toxic metabolite` such as pyruvic acid. This interferes with the function of a part of the body and is the beginning of degenerative disease”. Read your labels carefully because sugar is in almost all processed foods. 2. Dirty Dairy

Dirty dairy is any kind of dairy that is non-organic and pasteurized. The only kind of dairy that has some nutritional value is if it is raw or unpasteurized and organic from grass-fed cows, sheep, or goats. When milk is pasteurized it completely kills all nutrient value, rendering it a completely dead food. This requires significant amounts of energy and work for the body to process the food when you consume it, leaving you fatigued. Homogenized dairy is even worse as it completely denatures all the proteins and becomes even more toxic to consume. Dairy is also a mucous forming food. If you have ever struggled with allergies, sinus infections, or digestive distress, most likely you have excessive mucous production in your body. Mucus production is a result of the body’s protective mechanism, but too much mucous results in malabsorption of foods in the digestive tract, leading to malnourishment, and degenerative disease. On top of being mucous forming, the worst part is the fact that commercialized dairy these days is full of artificial hormones, steroids, and antibiotics. It is IMPOSSIBLE for you to consume dairy products with these dangerous elements and not be damaged at some level from them.

3. Gluten

To keep it short and simple, modern wheat and grains is night and day different to what was available in the Bible days. There is a common misconception that whole wheat is actually healthy for you. I used to think this as well, but the truth is, even whole grain wheat can be damaging to our bodies. Did you know that the wheat grain available in ancient times didn’t actually contain gluten? Interesting huh? The wheat grain back then is referred to as Einkorn Wheat and doesn’t contain any gluten nor does it compare to regular grains. This type of wheat is very nutritious! Modern day gluten-containing foods damage our intestinal lining and cause inflammation, always leading to degenerative effects on the body. Remember our talk about sugar? GMO foods are manipulated genetically so when the crops are sprayed with highly toxic RoundUp and pesticides, they don’t die. What the heck are Parabens???

Oh Hey!

So, I constantly am asked questions on a wide variety of topics. Recently I was asked to read the ingredient list on a product that was marketed as being “all-natural”, hypoallergenic, and relatively “clean” as far as ingredients go. Immediately I called BS on the product when I read “butylparaben, methylparaben, & propylparaben”. First, it’s important you understand that our skin is our largest organ. WHAT YOU PUT ON YOUR SKIN IS IMMEDIATELY ABSORBED INTO YOUR BODY. Makes you think a little different about all of those skin products, huh?

 

What exactly are these weird sounding ingredients?

Parabens are a class of chemicals used as preservatives in a wide variety of skin products, supplements, and cosmetics. They can be found in shampoos, lotions, shaving cream, topical medications, spray tanning solution, makeup,and toothpaste. They can also be used as food additives.

 

What’s wrong with them?

Here’s where me and parabens don’t get along… These suckers mimic estrogen in the body, and in the worst way. These chemicals can be referred to as Xenoestrogens or “synthetic estrogens”. They are the bad types of estrogen’s that increase one’s risk for breast, prostate, or ovarian cancer. Ya..no bueno. There are millions of men walking around with way to much estrogen simply from the lotions, shaving cream, and soaps they are using. Those seducing manly soaps, sprays, lotions, & shaving creams that are supposed to make you more macho and drive the ladies crazy??? Sorry to break it to ya boys, but the majority of those are actually increasing your girly hormones. Awesome, right?

And Ladies…these are not the estrogen’s you want floating around your body. If you’re hoping to avoid being one of the 1 in 3 women diagnosed with breast cancer, it is IMPERATIVE that you eliminate these products from your daily routine. Want to hear something, crazy? A study published in the Journal of Toxicology in March 2012, showed paraben esters were present in 99% of women tested with breast cancer. Wowzas! That’s a MASSIVE number! And for those of you wanting to shed the belly weight and extra fat on your body, getting rid of xenoestrogens is a must!

Xenoestrogens are fat soluble, and they must find a home. Where do they find it? They lodge in fatty tissues like the abdomen.

  • Xeno means foreign.
  • Xenoestrogens mimic natural estrogen.
  • Xenoestrogens deposit in fatty tissues like the abdomen.

Interesting, right?

Now, think about our kids. Hundreds of thousands of kiddos are being slathered in parabens from day 1 of life. How do you think that’s going to impact them as they grow and mature? Poor kids already have a toxic food supply and other issues to deal with!

 

How does one avoid these ingredients, they are everyyywheeeeeeere!

True. True. They are everywhere, but lucky for us, there are some kick ass companies out there who are committed to doing their part to make this a safer, cleaner, healthier planet! When you’re weeding through your current collection of soaps, gels, lotions, creams, shaving creams, makeup, etc.. and you need to replace those items (because you will), my recommendation is to go into a Whole Foods, Sprouts, local health food store, OR to go shopping online. I LOVE www.iherb.com. (First time users of iherb, who use this specific link will get $5-$10 off your first order!) You can get pretty much anything from this website and with free shipping, which is amazing! Shop around their cosmetics section and read the ingredients. Look for the “NO PARABENS” label. If a company is proud of their clean product, they’re going to let you know by having a list of “No’s”.

 

Ok, so I cleaned the parabens out of my house, how do I get them out of my body after being exposed?

Great question! I’m so glad you asked! Here are 4 tips to get you on your way!

1. JUICE- For those of you who are juicers, the combo of celery & beets are awesome to flush out the “bad estrogens” in the body. Any green juices are going to help you naturally detox toxins.

2. EXERCISE- Exercising, especially performing exercises that stimulate your lymphatic system such as rebounding, running, or jumping, are very effective for helping the body get rid of those nasty parabens. Aim for at least 20 minutes per day. You can do that, I know you can!

3. LOVE YOUR LIVER- Our liver is incredible. Unfortunately, though, it gets clogged up rather quickly with the world we live in. Our liver is a major detox organ, so giving it some TLC will really help your body eliminate unwanted toxins. Here are some easy ways to love on your liver:

CRAM THE CRUCIFEROUS VEGGIES- Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, kale, cabbage, collard greens, & brussels sprouts contain specific components that help the body eliminate xenoestrogens such as parabens. Two of these compounds are called Indole-3-Carbinol (I-3-C) & Diindolylmethane (DIM). There are numerous studies on this powerful duo when it comes to anti-cancer properties and flushing xenoestrogens out of the body. Ask google, you’ll see! 😉

So, how are you feeling about this whole thing? Overwhelmed? Relieved? Pumped up? Pumped down? I know it can be a bit much hearing about all the crazy things that seem to be out to get you in our world today, but the awesome part is that there is always something we can do to move in the right direction! Get excited instead of overwhelmed! We’re getting healthier together, becoming more aware, setting up future generations for success! It’s going to take effort and determination, but everything worth anything does, right?! I promise you it’s worth it to take these simple steps now instead of waiting until you’re in a sense of panic because of an abnormal test result. Ain’t nobody got time for that whole sickness stuff, right? Right!

Busy Mom went from Victim to Victor

Tears well up in my eyes just in calling to memory the progress I have made since choosing to go through the Empowered Woman program…LIFE CHANGING!!!!

I am a 37 year old wife and mother of two (ages 7 & 4).  I work 40+ hours a week as a project manager for an engineering company, pay the family bills, make most of the meals, get the kids off to school/daycare, do most of the household chores, etc. etc.

SDocument_C13080710021In a nutshell, from a very young age in an effort to be the perfect little Christian girl, I put everyone first, held them on a pedestal  and denied myself of any feelings (besides guilt, I felt guilty about everything). The need to overdo everything and be everything to everyone came from wanting to gain acceptance of others and God and if I was lucky or perfect enough, maybe even their love.  This led to a very unhealthy relationship with food.  I reached for food to numb me, which was comforting but only for a while. As one could imagine, the scale shot up and then began the self hatred and subsequent rounds of people pleasing…why would anyone like me for me; the fat worthless slob that I was?

In 2006 I had gastric bypass surgery and lost 110 pounds.  Sure, this fixed my weight but did not address the mental or spiritual aspects behind my weight struggles. I desperately tried to fill the emptiness that I still had by doing more and more “stuff” because that was all I knew to do, but it landed me in & out of the hospital with secondary anxiety and reactive hypoglycemia because of my poor food choices.

I seriously thought I was going to die.

I was maxed out and my body was finally manifesting physical signs in a desperate attempt to get me to slow down. I began taking steps to a more balanced diet to correct the hypoglycemic portion of the problem and then early in 2013 I attended a couple of seminars held by Jessica.  She talked about her Empowered Woman program and the body, mind, and soul connection.  I knew in the core of my being that I needed to be a part of her next group.

 

 

So, here I am, 14 weeks into the program; I have lost 12 pounds, I have not had any anxiety attacks, I feel as though I can breathe IMG_7625but most importantly I have finally learned to not only be ok with myself, but to actually love ME!!! Exactly how I am in this time. My relationships are being restored, and most importantly my relationship with my Heavenly Father. As I look back over my life I see His hand of mercy. Given the magnitude of my unhealthiness I could have landed just about anywhere but He led my choices and prepared me for this time; for complete healing. For the first time in years I am not searching for something to fill that deep void; I feel connected and at peace because I am acknowledging my feelings and needs. I am taking responsibility for where I am, not just taking the back seat and wondering how the heck I got here and blaming others on the way. I am putting into place healthy boundaries and trusting God.

Sure this could have happened regardless my choice to go through Jessica’s program but I truly believe that her program expedited the process and got me to think about things that could have otherwise taken years to arrive at. Each week she releases a section for the body, mind, and soul; the materials were easy to read and worked into my busy life. You will get out of it what you put into it, trust me!! What I love…Jessica is genuinely accessible and makes sure you get it, on a weekly basis with her group calls and personal check-ins!  She will laugh, cry, pray and work hard with you. I have never felt judged for what I didn’t know.  Her materials provide a solid foundation for taking the necessary steps towards a healthier you, in every aspect of your life…if you choose to do so.

For me, this choice changed my “victim mentality” into “victor mentality” and my life will never be the same.

SONORA HEALTH CLASS TOMMORROW!

Hey Everyone!

I’m SO sorry this is last minute, but I wanted to make sure you all know that tomorrow at 1pm I will be speaking for FREE in Sonora, CA!

It’s off of Tuolumne Road in the Warehouses. Because I don’t know what address to give you, here are general directions…

Turning off of Tuolumne Rd. or Standard Rd. (depending on which way you’re coming), into the warehouse/storage area, you will see a road turning into the warehouses that has a sign advertising dance. Once you turn in there, it will vear to the right and you will see a large Century 21 sign advertising a building for sale. Turn left at that sign and then the immediate right. You will see lots of cars and the warehouse that we are in will be on the right.

She defeated depression, anxiety, & obesity!

Today’s Sunrider Spotlight is a woman’s story about defeating life-long depression, severe anxiety, and being over weight with one secret weapon…the SUNRIDER FOODS! Check it out!

In 1995 as a junior in high school, I was diagnosed with depression.

From then on out, I was off and on anti-depressants. Every time I had a baby, post-partum depression would follow. Immediately, I would be put on meds yet again. After having my third child, I no longer only had post-partum, but severe anxiety attacks and many hospital visits.

In June of 2011, Sunrider was introduced into my life through my sister, Shawn. She always has some pretty cool tricks up her sleeve. Within six weeks of being on the Sunrider foods, I made the decision to no longer be controlled by meds. I don’t recommend everyone dropping their meds like I did. I was just sick of being controlled by a chemical.

It’s been 16 months since I took my last medication. In August of this year, I had an anxiety flare up due to stress. Through Sunrider and lots of prayer, I’m still medication free.

I also give a shout out for the Biggest Winner Challenge! I have lost 34 1/4 inches and 63 pounds. Woot! Woot! I need to lose four more pounds to be considered a healthy weight. I can do it. Even my doctor is freaking out!

You are probably wondering what Sunrider Foods I eat every day. Here it goes: NuPlus, Quinary, Calli Night, Fortune Delight, Sunnectar, and Beauty Pearl.

If I feel anxiety coming on, I’ll talk to Jesus, take Sunrider’s Ese, and the anxiety will be gone. You have no idea the FREEDOM I feel knowing I can Sunrider my way out of a panic attack.

Also, know that my husband and I lost jobs this year. We live from paycheck to paycheck. I made the decision to sacrifice to keep Sunrider in our lives. I have four children, and they are all on Sunrider along with my husband.

For us, Sunrider isn’t a choice. We have to do it no matter what the cost. You see, my 7 year old is a cancer survivor and my 2 year old is a failure-to-thrive survivor. Every single one of my family members needs Sunrider. It has brought life back to the Hughes party.

This Man Lost 260 Pounds!

This man’s story is amazing.

When you REALLY want to be a writer, you read from the best; you study their writing style, sentence structure, undertone, and grammar usage.

When you REALLY want to be a singer, you train with the best voice coaches, listen to the best singers, and learn from their singing style, use their techniques, and develop your talent using proven methods.

Love Yourself As Your Neighbor

Today’s post is aimed at a very specific group of people. This won’t apply to everyone, but for the people it is relevant for, today could be a powerful moment in your life.

Today, I’m speaking to those of you who are victims of abuse…from yourself.

Those of you who daily speak damaging words to yourself, tell yourself you’re a failure, you’re not good enough, you’re too fat, too skinny, too short, too tall, too light-skinned, dark-skinned, etc. Do these statements sound familiar?…

  • I hate my body, why can’t I be thin like the other girls?

  • I hate my job, I feel like my life is such a failure.

  • I will never been good enough to get a job/salary/house/spouse…like them.

  • My body doesn’t work right, its broken, I will always feel sick.

  • I can’t believe I messed that up! I’m so stupid!!

  • Nobody loves me, everyone hates me, I should just go away.

  • Ugh…I am so fat! No one will ever love me, and why should they, I am gross!

  • I am so ugly, I hate the way I look.

  • I’m going to fail this test.

  • I’m not good at anything! Why am I even here?

These statements are pretty intense, but there’s a good chance that you have said something similar to yourself, and possibly on a daily basis. I know I have damaged my body and mind in this way numerous times over the years.

Whether you are a Bible reader or not, almost everyone has heard the verse, “Love your neighbor as yourself”. The truth is that no one will take care of you as well as you can. No one knows our feelings, thoughts, needs, like we do ourselves. Normally, we take care of ourselves better than others, so this Bible verse is helping open our eyes to the fact that we need to treat others as we want to be treated. This verse helps us to understand what Jesus is teaching as we all know how we want to be treated. Everyone wants to be loved, respected, and cherished, and through this verse, we understand we need to treat others with the same kindness.

In our day and age, we have a unique problem that is progressively getting worse, and that is SELF DESTRUCTION. This is especially true in women. The enemy (aka the devil) has come to steal, kill, and destroy. In women, he is especially effective at destroying our confidence, our sense of feeling beautiful, and our self-worth. Can I get an Amen?

For some of us, if we were to love our neighbor as we love ourselves, our neighbors would be pretty pissed!

Think about all the things you say to yourself on a daily basis. Now, imagine saying those things out loud directed at someone else! Yikes! Do you ever tell your inner self “I love you”? I know that may sound foreign to you, but why not? Loving yourself is not cocky, conceded, or arrogant. In fact, when other people have these attitudes of arrogance, 99% of the time it’s because of lack of self-confidence. Loving yourself is not arrogance, it is one of the BEST things you can do for your health!

I am reading a book right now by Louise L. Hay, called “You Can Heal Your Life“. AMAZING book and probably unlike anything you’ve ever read about health. Louise believes that nearly all state of dis-ease in the body comes from a lack of self-love. She also believes that any lack in life- finances, love, success- also stems from a lack of self-love. Obviously this is a very basic statement, and the book goes into much more detail, but this theory has a lot of merit to it, and many specialists have proven this to be true over the years as they continue to heal disease & cancers by addressing mental/emotional factors.

Think about it, if you love your body, you’ll take care of it- you’ll put healthier foods into it, you’ll exercise more, groom it better, you’ll feel better, be happier, and meditate on being, feeling, doing good.

If you loathe your body, you’re in an abusive relationship with yourself. You’ll end up putting junk into it, damaging it with hateful words, you most likely will hate exercise, and you’ll be stuck meditating on all the negative things in your life.

You attract into your life what you focus and meditate on. Those are two VERY different lives stemmed from one simple difference- their perspective and the way they love themselves.

 

TODAY’S CHALLENGE:

I want you to take notice of how you’re treating yourself today. Stand in front of a full length mirror and look at yourself with eyes of love and appreciation. Tell yourself “I love you”, “Thank you for working so hard and doing a million things per second to keep me alive. I promise to love you a little more each and every day, because you were created PERFECT.” Maybe write down all your thoughts that you have towards yourself so you can reflect on what’s really going on. We all have an inner child within us. This isn’t voodoo, hocus pocus, new agey philosophy, it’s reality. Talk to yourself as if you were talking to a 3-year-old. If a 3-year old fell down, would you kick them while they’re down, call them a failure, and tell them that no one will ever love them because they fell? OF COURSE NOT! You’d help them up, dust them off and tell them to try again, keep going, they’re doing great!

SO MUCH WILL CHANGE if we can do this one simple thing. I know you can do it! Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Let me know how it goes!

Sweaty Saturday: C.U.T. A.B.S.- How to Achieve Them

Abs…they’re beautiful aren’t they? We all want them and only a small percentage of the American population will ever achieve them. Believe me, I wish I was flaunting my flawless midsection here on this page, but I’m there with you. It’s in process ;). Why is it so difficult to get that perfect six pack?

Nutrition and exercise play a major role in the development of a cut and toned mid section, but there are some additional players in the game you may not have been aware of. Use my “CUT ABS” acronym to get closer to your dream 6-pack!

  • Cardio

You hate it…but you love it. Or….maybe you are at the stage where you still just hate it. Either way, cardiovascular exercise is essential for optimal health, and even more so for a toned abdominal section. EVERYONE has the potential to have a six-pack-WHY? Because we all have abdominal muscles! Duh! The problem is the layer of fat that is covering them. Proper cardio exercise helps expedite the fat-burning process, uncovering those beautiful muscles.

  • MY FAVORITE: HIIT- High Intensity Interval Training. This is in my opinion one of THE most effective and efficient ways to burn fat fast without putting heavy stress on your body. Some great resources: The Insanity Workout, Zumba, Crossfit, Mercola’s Peak 8, Sprints, Circuit training.
  • Undenatured Protein

Our society has missed the mark when it comes to protein. If you’re in the body building/athletic world, it is most likely that you are getting the WRONG kind of protein, and it can be very dangerous! It is unfortunately all too common for people to purchase huge tubs of protein powder not even knowing the source and the added ingredients. As long as it has zero carbs or sugar and 5 million grams of protein, it’s a good thing, right? WRONG! The majority of protein powders have been severely denatured, processed, and isolated to the point where our bodies don’t recognize it because it’s not even a food. The dangerous part is the added ingredients. The top dangers to look for in a protein powder are:

  1. Artificial Sweeteners: Aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame k, splenda, saccharine.
  2. GMO- Any corn, soy, wheat, maltodextrin, cottonseed, vegetable source needs to be labeled NON-GMO.
  3. SOY- Many people reach for the soy thinking they’re healthier and that is a myth. Soy protein powders are very harmful to the body because they are most likely GMO, they have 19 allergenic proteins that cause damage in the body, enzyme inhibitors, and suppress the thyroid- all things that will turn ON the fat programs in your body.
  4. Pasteurized, homogenized if your whey protein has been pasteurized or even worse homogenized, it is no longer a food and has very little absorbable protein. It will make more work for your body that to give it nourishment.
  5. Isolated vs. Concentrated- You want to look for a concentrated whey protein source if that’s what you’re looking for, not isolated.
  6. Grass-Fed- If you choose to get whey, make sure it’s from grass-fed cows to ensure the highest amount of nutrition possible.

Of course, when eating animal protein, you also need to be VERY picky. You should only allow clean. organic, and grass fed meat into your bodies. When you eat fish, make sure it is wild and low on the mercury chain.

  • MY FAVORITE: Wild Salmon, Sardines, Grass-fed beef, small amounts of organic poultry, Spirulina (one of the highest plant sources of protein), properly cooked legumes, avocados, raw-soaked-sprouted nuts & seeds, Mercola’s Raw Whey, Organic pea protein, Sunwarrior Warrior Protein,
  • Train with Weights

Your abs are muscles, and in order to build them, you need to use them and strengthen them. The best way to do that is with weights. Weight training has a two-fold benefit. On one hand, building muscle burns fat faster, uncovering your beautiful midsection. Weight training is one of the best ways to build muscle. Doing ab exercises with weights also strengthens and tones your core at a faster rate than using nothing.

  • MY FAVORITE: In my opinion, CROSSFIT is one of the most effective ways to get the body of your dreams. (This past summer, I had the privilege of working out at Crossfit Trifecta in Vista, CA, and absolutely LOVED the group there! If you are in the Vista area, make sure you check them out! There are Crossfit gyms all over, so checkout the one nearest you!) Work with a trainer at your gym, or look up a workout plan that fits you online. There are wonderful ab exercise routines that you can find online! Whatever you do, consistency is the KEY!
  • Absorption & Assimilation

You may have heard, “You are what you eat”, but it’s actually not accurate. You are what you ABSORB, is closer to the truth. There are many people who are overfed and undernourished. The TOP six-pack killer foods are: SUGAR, GLUTEN, Pasteurized DAIRY, REFINED GRAINS, DIRTY ANIMAL PROTEIN, PROCESSED FOODS. These all damage the intestinal tract. If you have damage to your intestinal tract, it is VERY difficult and almost impossible to have a six pack. Why? For multiple reasons:

  1. Inflammation- What happens when you hurt something- an ankle, a bee sting, you hit your head…it swells. This is the body’s amazing reaction when there is damage. There are specific cells that act like the EMT’s of the body and rush to the scene to immediately start healing on the area. This excess fluid causes inflammation. When you have damage to your intestinal tract, the same thing happens, you end up with excess fluid, excess mucous, and a swollen feeling.
  2. Lack of Replenishment- When you have a damaged intestinal lining, you usually have little holes that were caused by yeast or parasites. In attempts to cope with the situation, the body usually produces extra mucous that coats the intestinal lining. There is damage to the microvilli (small hair like structures that line your intestinal tract) and this is no good because those microvilli are responsible for absorbing and assimilating nutrients. If they are damaged, you cannot absorb all the nutrients from the food you eat. If you can’t absorb nutrients, they can’t be sent to the muscles for recovery, meaning your body has a much more difficult time building muscle and getting strong. This can also cause malnourished organs that are essential for fat burning- the thyroid & adrenals especially.
  • Bloating

You may have a pretty lean body and some nice abdominal muscles, but if you have issues that cause your abdomen to bloat, obviously you are going to have a hard time obtaining the midsection you want. There are many factors that play into bloating, including the topics already mentioned. One of the biggest culprits for bloat is an imbalance of good-bad bacteria in the gut. Donna Gates, author of The Body Ecology Diet, believes that all obesity could be diminished by healing the gut and having the proper good-bad bacteria ratio. Isn’t that amazing! It’s true that the gut affects every single one of your organs and systems, not to mention 80% of your immune system resides here, so taking care of your digestive system is critical to optimal health and an optimal body.

MY FAVORITE: My favorite way to keep my bacteria in check is through making my own cultured foods & drinks. This is the VIP treatment, all my clients receive, is learning how to do this yourself, and for pennies! Cultured foods & drinks are much cheaper and more effective than a probiotic supplement. However, probiotic supplements are not all that bad, there are few companies that I trust with their probiotics: Sunrider Vitadophilus, RenewLife probiotics, Advanced Naturals probiotic, Garden of Life.

  • Stress

Stress is one of the biggest factors that will kill your six-pack dreams. Stress causes major bloating, damage to the digestive tract, and instigates a hormonal cascade that causes your digestion to slow (creating constipation), and your body to STORE FAT, especially around the midsection. Cortisol is a hormone released by your adrenal glands in stressful situations. When you have chronic stress in your life, this can cause the wonderful tire around the waist look as your body becomes inflamed due to hormonal imbalance and you continue to store fat.

There is also mounting evidence, especially in Eastern Medicine that proves if you are mentally/emotionally holding onto a feeling, if you feel unsafe and as if you need to be protected, if you were abused in the past, or if you feel as if you’re not good enough or constantly down on yourself, these will ALL make you continuously gain weight and if not dealt with will make it impossible for you to drop a pound. Over the past months, this has become fascinating to me as I have learned more about the TRUTH in this and learn ways to help my clients overcome it. MY FAVORITE STRESS BUSTERS: One of the best things you can do is to just CHOOSE to be happy & LOVE YOURSELF! You may be going through the absolute worst thing on the planet, but YOU choose your reaction. YOU choose how you feel on the inside. I know this is hard for some to swallow, but it is true. So, no matter what is going on around you, do whatever you need to, to FEEL GOOD, FEEL HAPPY, & LOVE YOURSELF JUST THE WAY YOU ARE. Some of my favorite things are to: exercise, yoga, sing with my guitar, visit with friends, bake healthy treats, go outside for a walk, watch a good movie, play softball, and spend hours doing something I really love.
