Is Birth Control Really That Harmful?

¨Birth control pills are like a virus in your computer, it screws up the whole system with one false sequence of information.¨

-Dr. Erika, The Case Against Birth Control Pill´s

It seems like today, Doctors are handing out birth control like candy without a second thought. There are advocates for both sides of birth control pills. Some say they are part of a woman’s empowerment and critical in preventing unwanted pregnancies and other’s say, they are extremely detrimental to a woman’s body and can cause disease such as cancer, infertility, endometriosis, and PCOS. For those who have more awareness about the obvious corruption that is going on in the health industry and like to follow the money trail, It seems like today, “presently, 16 million American women are using birth control pills, fueling a $2.8 billion industry.”- THAT was in 2004! Imagine what it is now!

I personally believe that my history of being on doctor prescribed birth control pills on and off for 4 years in attempts to regulate my menstrual cycles contributed to many illnesses I developed during that time period. This included an emergency trip to the hospital in the middle of the night to have a severely enlarged gallbladder removed. After surgery, I was told it was 5-times the normal size and was enlarged to the point that it caused my right lung to fill with fluid and my body to retain 10 extra pounds within 3 days. For someone who had a healthy diet and was a college athlete, this little pack of pills did quite the damage.

Besides my gallbladder issue, I also struggled with candida yeast overgrowth , heart palpitations, and constant intestinal problems that were intensely magnified after adding in the birth control pill- All expected effects from using the pill.

These synthetic hormones (By the way, the pill, patch, and shot are basically the same thing) have an effect on every part of the body; every hormonal system from the brain to the butt is affected. There are much safer alternatives to regulating your hormone and preventing pregnancy. Let’s take a look first at how the birth control pill works and then how to get rid of it.

How the Pill Works

Typically, your body ovulates once a month, ripening a new egg that will then journey down a fallopian tube. Eventually it reaches the uterus, where it would implant, if fertilized.

If not fertilized by a sperm, then the lining of the uterus that had built up in preparation for the fertilized egg is unnecessary. Both egg and uterine lining leave your body, cleansing your system and preparing for a new month- this is what is known as a woman’s period.

When you take birth control pills, you impose synthetic hormones on your natural cycle.

Many birth control pills contain high levels of estrogen that effectively convince your pituitary gland that you are pregnant (this explains some of the side effects of the drugs) and that you don’t need to ovulate. Because your body thinks you are pregnant, the uterine lining thickens. Once you start the placebo pills, however, your estrogen level drops suddenly, and your body menstruates “normally.”

There are multiple types of birth control pills on the market today, all with their unique set of side effects. High-estrogen birth control pills are proven to significantly contribute to breast cancer, embolisms and stroke. No matter what the type, they usually work by a combination or one of the following methods:

  • Function to prevent ovulation, therefor making pregnancy nearly impossible.
  • By reventing implantation of a fertilized egg in the lining of the uterus.
  • Thickens the mucus around the cervix, making it difficult for sperm to penetrate.

But wait! There’s more…Have you heard of the new brand of birth control that claims a woman can “safely” have a period only four times a year or even avoid having a period altogether for years at a time? What is this madness??? Ok, raise of hands, who would rather not have their period at all but get breast and ovarian cancer instead? Any takers?? I didn’t think so. I cannot emphasize enough how dangerous these methods are.

Let me tell you from first hand experience, I didn’t have a period for 7 years due to severe hormonal imbalance, and I wanted nothing more than to be healthy and for my body to function how it was supposed to. I am probably one of the rare women in the world who actually is excited to have a regular monthly cycle. It is a testament to how far my body has come!

There is actually scientific research into the fact that women may live longer than men on average simply due to the fact that we cleanse every month. Cleansing is a super important part of staying healthy! Interesting huh?

Here are just a few of the substantially increased risks from having high estrogen levels from these birth control methods:

  • Breast, Cervical, & Ovarian cancer
  • Blood clots, stroke, & heart attack
  • Gallbladder disease (I’m proof of that!)
  • Hypertension (High blood pressure)
  • Migraines
  • Weight gain
  • Mood swings
  • Infertility
  • Benign liver tumors
  • Decreased bone density
  • Yeast overgrowth and infection: almost ALWAYS occurs! Birth control acts as antibiotics do in killing all of the benificial bacteria in our guts leading to an overgrowth of yeast and bad bacteria, which cause many more problems…
  • Irregular bleeding or spotting
  • Breast tenderness
  • Decreased libido
  • Increased colds, viruses, and infections due to decreased immune system

**Quick note…when drugs have “side effects”, it means it was actually PROVEN in the lab to cause these effects. Makes you want to read the fine print a little closer, huh? These effects are so common that there are countless lawsuits going on right now against companies such as Yaz, Yasmin, & Ocella.**

“What is not usually mentioned, or even known, is the metabolism of birth control pills by the liver requires extra amounts of the B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, magnesium and zinc. That means if you’re taking birth control pills for years at a time, as are most American women, you’re creating nutrient deficiencies. Weight gain, fluid retention, mood changes, depression and even heart disease can all arise from nutrient imbalance.” (Source)

But it Regulates My Period?

85% of women suffer from PMS (PreMenstrual Syndrome). Cramping, extreme fatigue, nausea, bloating, puffiness, extreme pain,  all of these lovely symptoms ARE NOT NORMAL. This is an indication that there is a hormonal imbalance that needs to be addressed. Instead of getting to the root of the issue, many women, not knowing any better, follow their doctor’s advice and start birth control pills. Usually after the first couple weeks the patient is thrilled because her unbearable pain and PMS symptoms went away! I have had friends who have literally passed out or had to go to the ER because their pain was so horrible. Let me tell you something, BIRTH CONTROL PILLS WILL NEVER CURE ANYONE OF HORMONAL IMBALANCE. The sad fact is, that it is going to severely perpetuate the problem in the long run and push you towards a cancer diagnosis. NOW is the time to get off the pill and get help balancing your hormones so you no longer have to suffer from these symptoms nor keep putting synthetic cancer-causing hormones in your body.

But, I’m Not Ready To Get Pregnant?

I am not advocating that you should stop taking the pill and take the risk of getting pregnant if you are not ready for that step in life. There are much safer methods of preventing pregnancies that will not put your health at risk. The best method is using a Copper IUD (Intrauterin Device)- WITH NO HORMONES. Here is a sight that explains it in more detail. Basically it is a “T-shaped” device that is inserted and prevents pregnancy due to the copper’s spermacidal qualities and prevents implantation of the egg. It can be left in for 10 years, and removed at any time if you decide you’d like to get pregnant. It does not affect a woman’s hormonal cycle whatsoever, and is the safest, most reliable, and most inexpensive method of birth control.

You can also use natural family planning techniques such as checking your temperature, cervical mucous, and tracking ovulation, which is the least invasive, but not 100% reliable.

So, there you have it. Now you have a choice to make. You can take action now or choose to shrug your shoulders and wait until a diagnosis. Hormones out of whack are nothing to ignore. It is the driving force behind many cancers and simply making sure your hormones are balanced now will dramatically decrease your risks of getting one of these scary diseases.
